Are restaurants required to provide nutritional information?

Updated: May 24, 2023

In recent years, there has been a growing concern over the health impact of the food we consume, leading many people to become more conscious about what they eat. As a result, consumers are increasingly interested in obtaining nutritional information about the food they consume, and restaurants are no exception.

In this blog, we will explore whether restaurants are required to provide nutritional information on their menus and the reasons behind this regulation.

Menu with nutritional information

In the United States, restaurants with 20 or more locations are required to provide nutritional information about their menu items. This regulation was introduced as part of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, which was signed into law in 2010. The law aims to provide consumers with more information about the food they consume to help them make informed decisions about their health.

Restaurants must provide the following information for standard menu items:

  1. Calorie count

  2. Total fat

  3. Saturated fat

  4. Trans fat

  5. Cholesterol

  6. Sodium

  7. Total carbohydrates

  8. Fiber

  9. Sugar

  10. Protein

Restaurants can provide this information in various ways, such as on the menu, a separate handout, or on their website. They must also provide the information in a manner that is easily accessible to the consumer.

While this regulation may seem like a burden for restaurant owners, it is essential for consumers to have access to nutritional information. The information allows individuals to make informed choices about what they eat and can help them maintain a healthy diet. It is also beneficial for individuals with specific dietary requirements, such as those with food allergies, intolerances, or medical conditions like diabetes.

Even if a restaurant chain is under 20 locations, some restaurants choose to include nutritional information on their menus anyway to attract health-conscious customers and differentiate themselves from competitors.
